Ensemble Tōzai
Introduction
Established for the Japan 2001 Festival, the ideals behind Ensemble Tozai were of collaboration, communication, and cross- cultural understanding.
Tozai means ‘East- West’; comprising four Japanese musicians specialising in traditional Japanese and Western classical music, the group creates a soundworld that is truly unique.
Repertoire
This combination of violin, piano, shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and taiko percussion means that Ensemble Tozai has a wide- ranging repertoire. They perform traditional Japanese music as well as new works by living composers, including a commission by Gavin Bryars.
