Emer McDonough (flute)

Emer McDonough is Principal Flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Britten Sinfonia, and is the flute player of the Haffner Wind Ensemble. She was previously Principal Flute of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Based in London, Emer has also performed as Guest Principal Flute with all of the major British orchestras.

Emer’s solo career has included the British premiere of the Christopher Rouse Concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Marin Alsop’s debut concert as Principal Conductor, and has featured as soloist in the televised “Symphony Sessions” with National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. Emer has also performed as concerto soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Irish Chamber Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra and the Belgian Radio Orchestra. Emer is a regularly recorded artist as a chamber musician and with the aforementioned orchestras.

A student of Doris Keogh at The Irish Academy and Peter Lloyd at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Emer has a Bachelor of Music with Honours, a Professional Performance Diploma with Distinction and a Postgraduate Diploma from the RNCM. As a teacher, Emer was previously visiting lecturer at the Dublin College of Music and Professor of Flute at Trinity College of Music. She has also given masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Irish Academy and the Oxford Flute School and has tutored the flute section of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
